Sperm vs. Intelligence
Research suggests that the higher the level of intelligence, the better the quality of the sperm. This does not have to do anything with fertility or the likelihood of conception. It is an interesting correlation that happens to be significant. This theory was hypothesized by Rosalind Arden of King’s College, London.
For this research, 425 Vietnam era veteran between the ages 31 to 44 was observed for an intelligence test. Their sperm quality was also measured and there was a high correlation between their intelligence and the quality of the sperm disregarding the external factors such as age, cigarette smoking, body mass index, alcohol consumption and sexual abstinence. Note: the men were abstained from sex for 24 hours.
A possible reason for this relationship is the fact that intelligent people tends to lead healthier lifestyle. They are less likely to smoke, and they tend to exercise and eat healthier. Another possible reason is the evolutionary biologists’ view that intelligence is genetically passed on from generation to generation. It’s like a peacock’s tail evolving to become majestic throughout time to attract mate. In a Darwinism sense of fitness, the better built the opposite sex, the easier the attraction and that comes with the right choices through intelligence.
